Building Sustainable Retaining Walls

How Gabions Support Modern Development and Environmental Responsibility

When specifying retaining wall solutions for residential, commercial or infrastructure projects, strength, durability and cost are often at the top of the agenda. However, as sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration across the construction sector, developers and engineers are looking for solutions that deliver long-term performance while reducing environmental impact.

At Enviromesh, we believe that effective civil engineering should balance technical excellence with responsible environmental practices. A recent project at the Mosshayne development in Exeter demonstrates how thoughtful design, material selection and local sourcing can contribute to a more sustainable approach to retaining wall construction.

Delivering Sustainable Engineering at Scale

Working on behalf of Persimmon Homes at the Mosshayne development, the Enviromesh team successfully installed approximately 800m³ of welded mesh gabions in just under six weeks.

The project highlights how modern gabion solutions can provide reliable structural performance while supporting wider environmental objectives. By considering the entire lifecycle of the retaining wall system – from manufacture and installation through to long-term performance – developers can make more informed and sustainable choices.

Designed for Long-Term Performance

One of the most important sustainability considerations in any construction project is longevity.

The gabion baskets used at Mosshayne were manufactured from Galfan® and Organic Polymer coated steel mesh, providing an impressive 120-year design life. By designing infrastructure to last for generations, projects can significantly reduce the need for future replacement works, repairs and material consumption.

A longer service life does more than lower maintenance costs. It also helps reduce the embodied carbon associated with future reconstruction, replacement materials and ongoing site operations, making it a more responsible choice for long-term developments.

The Benefits of Local Material Sourcing

Sustainable construction is not only about selecting the right products; it is also about where those products come from.

For this project, the gabions were filled using stone supplied from Holcim’s Stoneycombe Quarry, located approximately 30 miles from the development site. By sourcing aggregates locally, transportation distances were minimised, helping to reduce vehicle emissions and associated environmental impacts.

Local stone also helps developments blend more naturally into their surroundings, preserving the character and appearance of the region while delivering the structural performance required for modern construction.

Supporting Local Industry and Supply Chains

Responsible sourcing brings benefits beyond environmental performance.

Specifying locally quarried stone helps support regional businesses, local employment and established supply chains. It allows developers to invest within the communities where projects are being delivered while maintaining construction traditions that have shaped the landscape for generations.

At Enviromesh, we understand the value of working closely with trusted suppliers and local partners to deliver projects efficiently, sustainably and to the highest standards.

Looking Beyond Materials

True sustainability in civil engineering extends beyond selecting environmentally friendly products. It requires consideration of the entire asset lifecycle, responsible sourcing practices, efficient delivery methods and long-term performance.

The Mosshayne project demonstrates how these principles can work together to create retaining wall solutions that meet engineering requirements while supporting broader environmental goals.

As sustainability continues to shape the future of construction, working with experienced specialists who understand both performance and environmental considerations will become increasingly important.
